1. The precursor to the modern day personal computer was formulated in the 1970s and was meant to help math and science.  Shortly after as  programming and technology became more accesible  digital media evolved. Digital media was heavily influenced by previous art movements and was heavily influenced by Duchamp.

“the digital revolution is a revolution of random access-a revolution based on the possibilites of instant access to media elements that can be reshuffled in seemingly infinite combinations” (15)

Michael Engle created the earliest forms of digital art

easily recreated, make endless copies without regard to original artists views on it

manipulating images

interactivity, viewers become part of the piece  EX: Nam Jun Paik’s “Random Access” (6)-audio tapes on a wall, people come around and play different segments.
